FDI by Country 2024
FDI stands for Foreign Direct Investment. It’s when one company decides to buy into another company operating in another country. The list of FDI by country involves inflows and outflows of money in and out of various locations.
Inflow Versus Outflow Investments
“Inflow” means the amount of money transferred into a location. The term “Outflow” refers to the sum sent out to another place.
As of 2023, $378 billion in FDI inflows went to developed countries, a decrease from previous years, while developing economies received a record $916 billion in inflows. Outflows from developed countries totaled about $1 trillion, marking a 17% decline, while outflows from developing economies fell to $459 billion (UN Trade and Development).
Top FDI Inflow By Country
The United States received a sum of $388.08 billion inflow in 2022. This ranked the nation number one on this dataset.
China ranked as having the second highest inflow at this time, and this totaled $180.17 billion. Singapore ranked third at $140.84 billion, Hong Kong was fourth with $120.95 billion, and France fifth with $105.42 billion.
Top FDI Outflow By Country
The number one 2022 FDI outflow ranking also went to the U.S., totaling $426.25 billion. Germany came in second with $178.87 billion, Japan – third with $175.40 billion, and the United Kingdom fourth with $158.93 billion. China ranked as having the fifth highest outflow amount, which totaled $149.69 billion.
Global FDI Shifts (2020-2021)
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which includes 38 countries as of 2021, provides top FDI country data for 2020 and 2021. Post-pandemic numbers spiked 88% higher than what they measured before the Covid-19 quarantines started. This surge happened in 2021, for a world total of $1.779 billion USD, which was up from $1.133 billion in 2020. Total FDI inflows increased by 75% around the world.
Within the 38 OECD countries as a whole, the amount of inflow increase almost doubled ($809 billion from $462 billion). For European Union countries, a drop from $195 to $138 billion occurred.
The Largest Decreases and Increases in FDI Net Inflows 2021-2022
Between the years 2021 and 2022, the United States experienced a significant decrease in FDI net inflows, going from $448.32 billion in 2021 to $388.08 billion in 2022, a decrease of $60.24 billion or approximately 13.44%.
An even more dramatic decrease was felt by China which went from $333.98 billion in FDI net inflows to $180.17 billion, which constitutes a decrease of $153.81 billion or a 46.05% decrease from 2021 to 2022.
Two of the most significant increases in FDI net inflows were observed in Brazil and Australia. Brazil went from $46.44 billion in 2021 to $91.50 billion in 2022, which is an increase of $45.06 billion or 49.25% in FDI net inflows.
Australia’s $24.79 Bn in 2021 FDI net inflows went up to $67.12 billion in 2022, which is a total increase of $42.33 billion or an impressive 170.75%.
