California

Krispy Kreme is a popular chain that holds over 370 locations in forty-one states. California holds the honor of having the most Krispy Kreme stores in America. With 37 locations, the love for the Krispy Kreme chain is palpable in offices, homes, and workplaces alike.

The origins of Krispy Kreme are interesting, and it begs the question as to why North Carolina is not found high on the list of several locations. The founding of Krispy Kreme was said to have started as early as 1937 when Vernon Rudolph purchased a yeast-raised recipe from a chef that originated from New Orleans.

Rudolph rented a building in Old Salem, North Carolina, and began baking the donut recipes to sell to local grocery stores. The recipe was loved by many, and the steady growth of his sales orders had Vernon Rudolph thinking about expansion extremely early in his entrepreneurial journey. The initial Krispy Kreme logo was designed by a local architect, and they opened a bakery in Ohio in 1939 to keep up with demand.

The most rapid expansion occurred in the 1950s when the chain began to be well-known in the southeast, partially thanks to opening an early store in Savannah, Georgia. It was eventually purchased by Beatrice Foods of Chicago in 1976 before a group of franchisees purchased it back from them in the 1980s.

Florida

Florida holds the second-most number of stores, holding 33 - just two more than the next contender, Georgia. Due to the natural expansion of the Krispy Kreme brand, it was known throughout the Southeast very quickly. This expansion explains why Florida is very high on the list. California is often an exception, as it holds many of the nation's food chains to cater to the demand of the large influx of populations they are receiving each year. To put it into perspective, New York only holds 13 locations of Krispy Kreme donuts, but 9 of them are found in New York City.

With this information, it is extremely common for a large multi-state and multi-national chain to defy its natural expansion to take advantage of profits and distribution networks in other states. Texas, Florida, California, and New York are often high on the list for these chains, as they hold some of the most populous cities in America.

Maine

Maine is among the list of few states that do not have any Krispy Kreme donuts within their borders. In fact, of the nine states without Krispy Kreme locations, five of them are located in New England: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The possible explanation is that the donut and coffee chain is either not popular in the New England region, or there is not enough of an incentive for stores to open their doors in the area. This could be because of the popularity and prevalence of Dunkin’ Donuts in this area.

It is important to remember that even if some states do not have any Krispy Kreme chains in their area, that does not necessarily mean that the donuts are not being supplied to the residents. Krispy Kreme started off as a recipe that was sold commercially before becoming a retail chain of donuts and coffee.
