No list that includes seafood could ever leave out the state of Maine. Maine, along with its Canadian counterpart of New Brunswick, has some of the best and most affordable lobsters in the world. Maine is known as the seafood capital, where it is not just a delicacy enjoyed, it is a complete and utter lifestyle. Apart from the iconic crustacean, crustaceans, you will also find an abundance of crabs, oysters, shrimp, and salmon. While these fruits of the sea are found in abundance, the fish dishes are also well-seasoned and fresh from the Atlantic Ocean. These include cod, flounder, haddock, and tuna.
There is no shortage of restaurants in Maine, but it is completely common to also taste dishes from the sea at your local host's house. Many of the Maine residents know their way around a pot, making delicious chowder and bisque and combining different cooking styles. Cape Elizabeth, Wiscasset, Cape Porpoise, and Kennebunkport have some of the best-reviewed places in the state, and you don't want to miss out.
If Maine doesn't have what you are craving, Hawaii is sure to fill the spot. Located far away from the mainland and the continental United States, Hawaii can be found as an island deep in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean. The water is much warmer and less turbulent than that of its Atlantic counterpart, which produces a much different lifestyle and taste to the dishes. Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Ahi Tuna are among some of the finest culinary dishes in the state and have elevated the food scene in the United States since they joined the Union.
Various fish species are also native to this state, some of which cannot be found anywhere else. Fish such as opakapaka, nhebi, naga, and enenue are found in abundance in the state but are considered a delicacy everywhere else. Due to the desire for these ingredients, Hawaii has a strict policy on its fishing industry, particularly due to its favorable climate and agricultural conditions. There aren't many people that haven't heard of a poke bowl around the world. This famous Pacific Islander dish often includes raw and slightly seared tuna which is laid to rest on a bed of delicious rice, vegetables, and fresh herbs, topped off with sesame seeds.
Washington may come as a surprise addition to the list. While many of the best states usually include those that have a large number of coastal towns and cities on the east and west coast (or completely surrounded by water in the case of Hawaii), Washington state is a top contender for some of the best seafood dishes and ingredients in the country. The main focus of Washington is Puget Sound, which has a complete overflow of trout, cod, pollock, and other types of seafood. The capital city of Seattle is not just known for its amazing coffee creations, but Pike Place Market contains some of the most diverse seafood vendors in the world.
