There are ten states that have a low resource load for autistic adults. This means that many aids and resources are available and have the capacity for more people to take advantage of them. Two of the states that are tied with the most available resources for autistic adults are Maryland and New York. In Maryland, for example, Towson University’s Hussman Center for Adults with Autism helps transition adults from school-based services to those needed for employment or higher education.
Other states with many resources for autistic adults include Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Colorado, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Montana.
On the other hand, some states have a high resource load. This could mean that they have few resources available or that there is not enough capacity for all the adults who need the services. Some states with high resource loads include West Virginia, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Nevada, Tennessee, and Nebraska.
The capital city of Philadelphia is well-known for having the resources necessary to integrate those who are diagnosed with ASD into the workforce and the community. The city has made strides and efforts that expand medical care, integration, programs, and provisions that further help to support those who need an extra push to fully join the community. In 2018, the city hall featured an artwork exhibited by those who are afflicted with autism. This shows their dedication to their craft, especially their attention to detail and focus, which are unmatched by many others.
In addition to the services being provided to the community for full integration, Philadelphia is having headwinds in professional networks and groundbreaking research that is being conducted to fully understand those with autism. The knowledge must be shared with the majority at large because it is much tougher to integrate persons with autism if there is stigma circulated within the community. The awareness and high access to a variety of resources are sure to break the preconceived notions that many may have.
Chicago has no shortage of programs for those who have been diagnosed with ASD. The city authorities of Chicago have implemented intervention programs, summer camps, clinical counseling, and various medical and non-medical therapies and support systems that lend a helping hand to integrating autistic people into the community. Chicago also has a robust program for young children who have been diagnosed early with autism to dedicate themselves to life-long personal development.
Although the programs are a great resource, it is important to remember that everyone is human and requires entertainment. Chicago offers movie nights for those who have been diagnosed with ASD, ensuring that the broadcast is sensory-friendly so that it can be enjoyed by all. The lights remain turned on and the volumes much lower, and you are not restricted or forbidden from moving around.
Resource Load is a method of measuring how much of a state's capacity to offer autism aid is currently in use. A lower number is preferable and indicates a state whose facilities have ample additional capacity.
