The Principality of Monaco, or just Monaco as it is most commonly known, is a country located in Western Europe. Monaco is unique because of its small size. In fact, at just 0.780 square miles, it is the second smallest country by area. It is only larger than Vatican City.
Despite its small size, though, Monaco has a total population of 38,400 per the numbers recorded during the last census of 2016. This puts the total population density at over 48,466 people per square mile, making Monaco the most densely populated country in the world.
The largest administrative area by population is Monte Carlo. This area, which is also known as a Quartier, is home to 15,200 inhabitants. Monte Carlo is known around the world for its tax laws and its rich population, as about 30% of people in Monte Carlo are millionaires.
Monaco is not a part of the European Union but does follow some policies such as border controls. The nation is also a member of the Council of Europe and uses the euro as its only form of currency.
The official language of Monaco is French, although other languages are commonly spoken throughout the nation, including Italian, English, and Occitan. One of the oddest things about the country’s population is that native Monegasques (that is, people who were born in Monaco) make up the minority of the population. French nationals are the largest ethnic group, making up more than one-quarter of the population. Monaco is also home to people from Italy, Belgium, Germany, and the United States, among other nations.
The majority of Monaco’s residents follow some form of Christianity. Catholicism is the most prominent religion and is followed by over three-quarters of the population. While Catholicism is the nation’s official religion, the constitution of Monaco guarantees freedom of religion for its people. There are also smaller populations of Jewish and Muslim inhabitants.
Monaco has the second-highest nominal GDP per capita in the world. The nation also has a very low unemployment rate, as many Monegasques travel to France and Italy for work. Monaco has the lowest poverty rate in the world and the most billionaires and millionaires per capita. Monaco has a strong economy due to tourism, banking services, and the gambling industry.
