Casablanca is a city that is located in Morocco. The city is the largest in the country, boasting a population of 3,359,818 people according to data from 2014. With a population so large, it is no surprise that it is one of the largest cities in Africa. This city has a significant role within the country, serving as Morocco’s main port and also being home to a massive financial center. The city is seen as a hub of economic and business activity.
The city of Casablanca covers an area of 220 square kilometers (80 square miles). The metro population is estimated to be over 6 million residents.
The majority of the population – approximately 98% -- live in urban areas. 99.9% of the population of Morocco are Arab and Berber Muslims.
The city has a very young population, with about one-quarter under the age of 15.
The population, which exceeds 3 million, accounts for about 11% of the population of the entire country.
The area was first settled during <a href=https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/casablanca-morocco-jewish-history-tour>the 7th century. Writings refer to the city as “Anfa.” In the 14th century, the city was already beginning to solidify its role as a port city. The city was overtaken by Merinids during this time period but regained its independence following a revolt. Later, in 1468, the city was destroyed following an invasion by the Portuguese.
During the late 1500s, the city went under Spanish rule. However, when Portugal and Spain were no longer integrated, the Portuguese took over again. The town was destroyed by an earthquake in 1755 and was abandoned shortly after. It was rebuilt, and during the 19th century, the population began to climb, and the economy was booming because of textiles and shipping traffic.
The city served as a critical port during World War II. An American base was also constructed in the city. In the years that followed, the city gained its independence from France, attracted top businesses, and has a thriving tourism industry. The city is now known as the business and economic capital of Morocco.
Casablanca’s role as the chief port of Morocco and its status as being home to one of the largest financial centers in Africa and its booming economy make it a desirable place to live. With extensive transportation systems, job opportunities, historic sites, and attractions, this city is poised to continue its growth throughout the decades ahead.
