Venice, Italy is known for being one of the most beautiful and remarkable cities on the planet. Those receiving a pension make up 19.94% of the population, but the average age of residents within Venice is 46, which is four years older than the average age of residents in the whole of Italy.
Tourism is one of the main industries in Venice. Although many residents feel as though tourists can be a nuisance, they cannot ignore the fact that tourism is vital to the city's survival. It is estimated that approximately 20 million tourists visit Venice annually and that number only increases as each year passes.
One of the biggest things that tourists should expect is the lack of public transportation in the traditional sense. Venice can be reached by car but, once the tourist arrives, they are faced with the decision as to where to park their vehicle. Depending on the parking garage used, a tourist can expect to pay anywhere from a few euros to 50 per day. There are absolutely no streets made for vehicles in the city and most visitors choose to arrive by train to avoid high fees. Once in Venice, tourists can certainly walk anywhere they wish, but the public water buses are the best way to get around the city. There are 19 scheduled routes and some lines even run 24 hours a day.
Even in a tourist area such as Venice, educating their citizens is an essential part of life. 24.8% of the population have a bachelor's degree and 17.4% have pursued higher education goals. 33.5% of the population has some form of college without having completed a full degree.
The average household income in Venice is currently $48,463, but this number depends on the age of the resident. Those that are below the age of 25 and just starting out in life can expect to make an average of $34,787 annually. Those aged 25 to 44 make $45,344. 45 to 64-year-old individuals and families have the highest income at $54,647, and those over the age of 65 can expect around $50,661. White-collar vs. blue collar jobs are split dramatically in Venice, with only 33.4% doing blue collar jobs, while 66.6% have white collar employment.
