Andhra Pradesh is a state along India’s southeastern coast. Andhra Pradesh borders Tamil Nadu to its north, Karnataka to its east, Telangana to its southeast, and Odisha to its south.
Andhra Pradesh has a population of 54 million people, making it the tenth-most populated state in India. It is the seventh-largest state by area, covering 160,205 square kilometers. On June 2, 2014, the northwestern portion of the state was separated to create a new state called Telangana.
Andhra Pradesh has a total of 31 cities. Two of which have populations over 1 million people: Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada.
The largest city in Andhra Pradesh is Visakhapatnam with a population of 2.036 million people and a population density of 3800 people per square kilometer. Visakhapatnam is a port city, known for its many beaches, and the financial capital of the state. Visakhapatnam is the 14th-largest city in the country.
Vijayawada is the second-largest city in Andhra Pradesh with a population of 1.034 million people. The sex ratio in this city is 997 females per 1,000 males, higher than the national average of 930 per 1000. The population density is about 16,939 people per square kilometer. Vijayawada is a rapidly growing urban area and is described as the commercial, political, and media capital of the state.
Guntur is the third-largest city in Andhra Pradesh with an estimated population of 833,782. Guntur is the 24th most densely populated city in the world and the 11th most populated city in India with a population density of 14,000 people per square kilometer. Guntur has a sex ratio of 1004 females per 1000 males, significantly different from the national average.
Of the total population, 70.4% constitute the rural population and 29.6% constitute the urban population. The sex ratio is 996 females per 1000 males, higher than the national average.
According to the 2011 census, the literacy rate in Andhra Pradesh was 67.41%, lower than the national average. This number, however, is expected to reach 91.1% by 2021.
There are four languages spoken in Andhra Pradesh. The official language is Tegulu, which 83.55% of the state speaks. Additionally, 8.87% speak Urdu, 3.69% speak Hindi, 1.01% speak Tamil, and the remaining 2.88% speak other languages.
Hinduism is the primary religion in Andhra Pradesh, with 90.87% of the population being Hindus. Muslims make up 7.32% of the population and Christianity makes up 1.38% of the population. The remaining 0.43% of the population practices other religions or no religion.
Between 2001 and 2011, the population of Andhra Pradesh grew by 10.98% and grew 13.9% between 1991 and 2001. Due to a low fertility rate of 1.5, Andhra Pradesh’s population is only expected to grow 0.1-0.2% by 2014.
