A public broadcaster is a TV or radio channel funded by the public for the community's interest. Public broadcasters are not state or commercial-owned, which removes outside influence.
In the United States, the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 authorized the creation of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). The CPB is a private, non-profit corporation that provides government support to public stations.
The public broadcasting channels in the US include the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and approved affiliates of PBS stations. Public broadcasting in the United States reaches 99% of the population with free access to programming and services.
The first public broadcasting channel in the United Kingdom was formed in 1922. The British Broadcasting Corporation, or BBC, is the largest public broadcaster in the world and is funded through television licensing fees. Other public broadcasting channels in the UK include Channel 3, Channel 4, Channel 5, and S4C.
France has three main public broadcasters: France Télévisions, Radio France, and France Médias Monde. The Catholic Television channel in France was founded in 1999 by the Archdiocese of Paris.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is a public TV and radio broadcaster with regional and international bureaus that play a significant role in times of national or international crisis and emergencies.
Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) is the central public broadcaster in Hong Kong and operates seven radio channels and three television channels.
Japan's only public broadcaster is the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK). NHK is one of the largest public broadcasters in the world and provides programming in Japan, Asia, and the world 24 hours a day.
South Korea has three public broadcasters, including the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), the Educational Broadcasting System (EBS), and the Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC). KBS is the largest of three broadcasters in South Korea.
In 1959, Prasar Bharati was established as a public broadcaster in India by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
