Gypsy Population by Country 2024

  • The terms "gypsy" and "gipsy" are common exonyms for a people group correctly known as the Romani (also spelled Romany or Rromani) or Roma.
  • While some Roma have historically welcomed the use of the term gypsy, others have found it offensive.
  • For countries whose estimated Roma population is given as a range, a maximum value is shown as well.
  • There exists no official or reliable data regarding the global Romani population. Multiple causes for this shortcoming exist. For instance, some countries do not collect data on ethnicity, and even in countries that do, many Romani decline to officially identify themselves as such for fear of discrimination.
