Gold is a globally essential commodity. Its numerous uses include commercial, industrial, and consumer applications. Within these categories, gold may have use as jewelry, dental components, money, electronics, and more. Because gold comes in many forms, its export statistics will depend on its form.
In 2021, the world gold trade totaled $434 billion, placing it as the seventh in trade value. That year, exports showed an upward trend with the export value of gold increasing from 2020 to 2021 at 2.14% for all non-monetary forms of the product. In 2018, gold had only a 5.1% tariff, placing it 818 on the listing of lowest out of 1259 commodity tariffs.
Gold comes in many forms when counting it for export numbers. These forms include powdered, raw or unwrought, and semi-manufactured.
Powdered gold is pulverized gold material. Unwrought has not undergone processing and is closest to the natural form. Semi-manufactured may have some processing, such as platinum plating, to make it more useful in its final applications.
Among these, the most traded form of gold is unwrought for non-monetary uses. The second most traded is semi-manufactured with powdered making up a very small percentage of the remaining gold trade.
The most recent statistics for 2023 come from 2022 and show the United Kingdom as the top exporter of semi-manufactured gold in the world. This country exported 1.26 million kg of gold at a value of $72 billion (USD). Singapore and Australia were the second and third-place exporters of semi-manufactured gold in 2022.
Unwrought gold departed in the greatest amounts from Switzerland in 2022, the most recent data for 2023. That nation exported 1.56 million kg of unwrought, not powdered, gold, which had a value in American dollars of $90 billion.
The United States and the United Arab Emirates placed second and third for their unwrought, non-powdered, gold exports. The total value of American exports in 2022 was almost $36.8 billion (USD). Third-place UAE had exports of unwrought gold valued at $35 billion (USD).
The United Arab Emirates exported the greatest amount of powdered gold in 2022, 11 thousand kg, totaling $274 million (USD).
Portugal was the second-highest exporter of powdered gold, shipping out 953 kg at a value of $55 million (USD), and the United States exported the third-highest amount of powdered gold, 638 kg, valued at $36 million (USD).
