Before European settlers reached the area that would eventually become San Angelo, the people that inhabited the land were known as the Jumano people.
During the colonization period, the area was a considerable hot spot among nations. Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, and finally the United States have laid claim in successive order over time. San Angelo as it is now known was born out of the efforts put into building Fort Concho. The industries that helped fuel the initial growth for San Angelo included farming and pleasurable vices such as visiting saloons and brothels.
Once the railroad was established, the town of San Angelo became a hub for transportation and eventually integrated the oil and gas present in the land into its most profitable industries.
