Lubbock is a city located in Lubbock County Texas. Lubbock has a 2024 population of 269,833. It is also the county seat of Lubbock County. Lubbock is currently growing at a rate of 1.11% annually and its population has increased by 4.58% since the most recent census, which recorded a population of 258,013 in 2020.

Lubbock is known as the “Hub City” because it is the hub of the region in economics, health care, and education. The city has been named as one of the best in the US for starting a small business due to its location, the ease of working with local government, and low commercial space rental rates. It is also known for its education and is home to one of the best high schools in the country.
Texas Tech University, Covenant Health System, Lubbock Independent School District, the University Medical Center and United Supermarkets are among the largest employers in the city.
The city of Lubbock has seen consistent growth since the early 1900s. Between the censuses taken in 1950 and 1960, the city grew to have a population of more than 100,000. Between 2000 and 2010, it broke the 200,000-resident mark. Since the census taken in 2010, the city has experienced 10% population growth, indicating that this city will continue to grow and thrive well into the future.
Lubbock’s history began back with the founding of Lubbock County in the 1870s. A small town was built that was the early start of modern-day Lubbock. The town merged with the town of Monterey, and the newly merged region retained the name. Lubbock was designated as the county seat in 1831 and was incorporated as a city in 1909.
Texas Tech University was founded during the 1920s, beginning the city’s legacy of quality education. Texas Tech University School of Medicine opened in 1969 and is now known as Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Reese Air Force Base was established in the city in 1941 and was in operation through the 1990s.
In 1970, Lubbock was struck by a tornado which killed 26 people and caused $125 million in damage. The city was rebuilt in the years that followed. Today, Lubbock is the largest contiguous cotton-growing region in the world. It boasts multiple shopping centers and malls, high-end stores, restaurants, and many attractions and landmarks.
