Frisco, Texas Population 2024

Frisco is located in Denton and Collin counties in Texas about 28 miles north of Dallas. Frisco is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex or DFW which has a population of 7.4 million as the 4th largest metro area in the country.

Diversity

Frisco has a foreign-born population of 19.8%. Unlike many cities in Texas with a large Hispanic or Latino minority, Asians make up the largest minority in Frisco which has one of Texas’ highest Asian populations. The city has large communities of people from India, South Korea, Japan, and China. Indians account for the largest share of Asians in Frisco and other cities in DWF and the Indian community now makes up 14% of the population of Collin County.

Population Growth

Frisco was the country’s fastest growing city between 2000 to 2009. While it lost its place as the fastest growing for a time, it regained the title as <a href=”https://communityimpact.com/dallas-fort-worth/frisco/city-county/2018/05/23/census-frisco-ranks-as-no-1-fastest-growing-u-s-city/”>America’s fastest-growing city in 2018. Between 2010 and 2018 alone, the city grew by 65,500 people. It grew by an astounding 8.2% between 2016 and 2017, adding 13,500 in a single year. Much of Frisco’s growth has been attributed to suburban development and commuters working in Dallas-Fort Worth. The growth in Frisco isn’t surprising as 7 of the top 15 fastest-growing cities in the United States are in Texas. Frisco projects its populatiom will <a href=”https://www.dallasnews.com/news/mckinney/2018/02/07/go-big-go-home-population-spikes-365-mckinney-20-years”>eventually surpass 370,000.

As Dallas was being settled, settlers traveled along the Shawnee Trail which became known as the Preston Trail then Preston Road. This path was originally an Indian footpath leading from the Red River to Austin and it had been used to drive millions of cattle to markets in North Texas. The frequent travel led to the Lebanon community which received a post office in 1860. By 1902, a line for the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway was built through the area. Watering stops were necessary for the steam locomotives but the high elevation of Lebanon required a watering spot four miles west.

A new community grew around the train stop and many residents of Lebanon relocated. While the town proposed the name Emerson, it was rejected by the Postal Service because it was too similar to another Texas town. The residents chose the name Frisco City in 1904 for the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway but it was later shortened to Frisco.

Frisco was an agricultural center in North Texas for many decades and had five cotton gins at one point. Its population remained below 2,000 until rapid growth began in the 1980s.
