Naperville is a city that is located in the state of Illinois. It is located within both Will and DuPage counties. Naperville, which is a suburb of Chicago, has been on many lists by various publications, including being named one of the safest cities in the country and ranking as one of the best cities for retirement, among other accolades.
Edward Hospital is the top employer in the area, giving jobs to over 4,000 people. Nicor, Alcatel-Lucent, the Indian Prairie School District 204, and the Naperville Community Unit School District 203 are among the city’s other top employers, providing jobs for thousands of residents in Naperville and surrounding areas.
Naperville has seen its population grow by staggering amounts throughout its history. The population in 1950 was just over 7,000 but jumped to almost 13,000 by the time of the next census. By 1980, the population had grown to exceed 42,000, then doubled in the 1990s. Current population estimates show that the population has increased by 3.7% since the 2010 census, and it won’t be long before the city hits the 150,000-resident milestone.
Naperville was first settled by Joseph Naper in 1831 under the name Naper’s Settlement. Family and friends also joined Naper in settling the area. Several families also moved to the, and over 100 settlers were living in Naper’s Settlement by 1832. It was believed that the Sauk Tribe would attach the area, so settlers temporarily moved to Fort Dearborn. When Fort Payne was built, the settlers returned.
In 1839, Naper’s Settlement was designated as the county seat for DuPage County. In 1857, the Village of Naperville was established and was later reincorporated as a city in 1890. As the 1900s arrived, the city continued to grow. The city, like many in the United States, faced its share of troubles, including a train collision in 1946 that was deemed as one of the worst in history.
The city’s population grew significantly beginning in the 1960s and continued through the 1980s and 1990s after the Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway was constructed. Chicago’s metro area also helped fuel population growth with the addition of jobs and new corporations in the area, including Western Electric, Bell Labs and Nicor.
Today, the city continues to attract new residents. In addition to its historic buildings and landmarks, the city also boasts multiple restaurants, shopping centers, and retailers. It also has the Naperville River Walk, which is a popular destination for residents and visitors.
