Despite its short history, Miramar has grown rapidly to become one of the largest cities in Greater Miami. Over the last 20 years, the population of Miramar has nearly tripled (https://www.floridatrend.com/article/26715/miramar-the-crossroads-for-florida-the-americas-and-the-world) thanks to the city's convenient location to downtowns throughout Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami counties, Port Everglades, Port Miami, the Port of Palm Beach and international airports in Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
Miramar has plenty of room to grow and it's already exceeded population estimates for 2030 that were made in 2000. By 2030, Broward County's population is projected to reach 2.05 million (http://www.broward.org/Planning/Demographics/Documents/2017PFAMReportA.pdf), up from 1.82 million in 2019.
Miramar was founded specifically as a bedroom community of Miami in 1953 when A.L. Mailman bought the property from H.D. Perry, Sr. Initially, 56 low-cost homes were built and sold quickly thanks to the low cost of land and homes in the area. Miramar was incorporated in 1955 and named for the area of Havana where Mailman owned a summer home. Miramar is Spanish for "look at the sea."
In the early days, the only major roads in the area were US 441, a two-lane road, and Hallandale Beach Boulevard. The city created a land use plan in the early 1970s to plan for Miramar's future growth. Today, Miramar is one of Florida's largest cities by land with two-thirds still undeveloped.
