The Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe is the longest official name of any country in Africa. Of course, many people are not in the habit of saying the entire official name of every country, which usually includes the type of government or legislation that was created during the inception of the constitution. For example, the USA is rarely called the United States of America in common conversation and even more rarely is it mentioned that it is the Republic of the United States of America. The country is often referred to as Sao Tome and Principe.
It is the second smallest country in Africa by population size, with nearly 200,000 citizens. It is followed by Seychelles, which is a popular tourist destination, known for its many beaches and tropical weather. The country has two twin islands, Sao Tome and Principe, which make up the name that it is officially recognized. There are many tourist attractions in this country, including Bom-Bom Island, Praia Banama, and its unique Obo National Park.
The country with the second-longest official name is the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria. It is rarely called this in conversation, and many people simply know it as "Algeria". Algeria comes from the word related to the city of Algier, which translates directly to The Islands. It contains four main islands that surround the city's coast.
Algeria is known as one of the hottest countries in Africa and the world, as greater than 90% of the topography is covered by the Sahara desert. Algeria's landscape is only 12% inhabited by people, with most being nomadic. Algeria is a popular case among researchers, as it is known as one of the few Islamic nations that practice strict gender equality. 70% of the country's legal positions are filled by women, and 60% of all students are female. Algeria has safeguarded its traditions throughout the years, and many are surprised to find that it is a popular tourist destination to experience the ancient and unfettered culture.
Algeria is home to 44 million souls, which it impressive due to its extreme weather and climate. El Oued, a famous attraction, translates to the "city of one thousand domes". It is akin to a grand bazaar, where visitors can purchase and view footwear, clothes, textiles, and carpets.
The country with the longest common name is the Central African Republic, not known by any other shorter name. It gained independence relatively recently in 1958. Various groups exerted their control over the area and fought over the country's resources and wealth. Religious wars have scorned the land for decades. Despite its poverty and low standard of living, the country boasts many tourist attractions which are evidenced by its natural beauty through wildlife and national parks. The hot climate supplies the world with such important crops as maize, tobacco, sesame, and millet.
