Jainism is a religion that primarily originates in the country of India. It teaches nonviolence, spiritual purity, and enlightenment. The goal of this religion is to avoid injuring all living creatures. The religion has ancient origins, but it is still one that is present in the modern world. In fact, it has become a large part of South Asian beliefs and practices.
Currently, the largest number of Jainism followers live in the country of India. It's estimated that there are between three and four million followers of the Jainism religion living in India in 2023. However, India is not the only country that has a population of people who follow the Jainism religion. In fact, there are many other countries with a Jain population. The United States is a country that has a large population of Jainism followers. It is actually the country with the second-highest members of the Jain population. Over 79K people in the United States follow the Jainism religion. The religion grew in popularity in the 1970s and today there is a large center located in New York City that is dedicated to the religion.
Kenya also has many Jainism followers and is home to over 68K who follow the faith. The highest concentration of the population lives in the cities of Nairobi and Mombasa. Festivals and other programs are held in Kenya regularly. While the United Kingdom doesn't have as large of a population as India, the United States, or Kenya, it is fourth on the list. Nearly 17K people from the Jainism faith currently live in the United Kingdom.
Canada is the final country to make up the top five and is also the last country on the list to have over 10K followers of the Jainism religion. There are approximately 12,101 people living in Canada who follow the faith. The remaining countries in the top ten include Tanzania with 9,002 followers, Nepal with 6,800 followers, Uganda with 2,663 followers, Burma with 2,398 followers, and Malaysia with 2,052 followers.
While Jainism is a religion that got its start back in the 7th century BCE–c. 5th century CE, it is still a religion that is widely followed to this day. And, members of the religion have formed communities all around the world where they can practice the religion together in many forms.
