Because of the location of Romania, it is widely believed that people have been living in this area for tens of thousands of years. There are a lot of people who believe that humans have been living in Romania for about 50,000 years, with much of the evidence based on what has been unearthed from archaeological digs. Then, carbon dating is used to figure out how old these items are. Written history doesn't go back that far, so a lot of this is based on hypotheses, but the first written history of Romania goes back to the time of the Romans.
The Romans took control of Romania during the first and second centuries AD. The Roman empire was based in Rome, but it eventually spread to cover the entirety of the Mediterranean, which includes Romania. Formally, Roman Dacia starts in 106, and the Romans were in control of Romania for close to 200 years. The Romans lost control of Roman Dacia in 275. At that time, Constantianian attempted a reconquest of Dacia, and there was a long period where Romania changed hands a few times. During the Middle Ages, Romania was a place of battle, and it participated in the Crusades as well. Romania was unstable for a long time, and it eventually gained its independence.
In 1848, Romania declared its independence, and the modern state of Romania was formed. Romania itself was ravaged during both World War I and World War II. Because Romania is between the Russian Empire and the Kingdom of Bulgaria, and because Romania had a secret treaty with Germany and Austria-Hungary, it was right in the middle of some of the biggest battles of the Eastern Front of World War I, leading to great suffering for the civilian population. Then, during World War II, Romania suffered again. It was in the middle of the Soviet Union and the Germans, leading to more fighting and devastation for the country. It also dealt with its fair share of fascists, leading to a host of other issues.
Following the end of World War II, Romania became a client state of the USSR, unable to break free from the Iron Curtain despite its pro-western leanings. Romania was ruled by a brutal decade for a number of years, but Romania was eventually given its autonomy with the fall of the USSR in 1991. Today, Romania is considered a democratic country, but it is also a country that is still developing. It is one of the poorest countries in Europe, but it plays an important role in European affairs. Romania also has a major presence in the region because of its sports prowess. Romania has been growing and expanding quickly, and it is likely to play a bigger role in the affairs in the continent in the years to come.
The country of Romania is 146 years old, founded in the year 1878.
