Taiwan is a country that has a very diverse population spread across over 35,000 square kilometers. Like the world's other largest countries, Taiwan's population is spread among its various cities and towns, with many of its residents living within its urban cities. Taiwan has a total of 23 cities. While this doesn't seem like many when compared to other countries, many of its cities have extremely large populations that contribute to the country's status as one of the most populous in the world. The 23 different cities are divided into administrative divisions. The three divisions are Special Municipality, Provincial City and County-Controlled City.
Taiwan's most populous city is Taipei, which as a population of 7.8 million as of 2016. In addition to Taipei, there are two additional cities that have populations that exceed one million. The country also has nine cities with populations between 100,000 and one million, and nine cities with populations between 10,000 and 100,000 that contribute to the total population of the country.
Over the years, the country's rural population has declined as natives and immigrants are choosing to move to the bigger cities as they become more developed and industrialized. As early as 1989, the rural population of Taiwan accounted for less than 25% of the country's total population. The urban population now accounts for more than three-quarters of the total population, with many residents moving to the three biggest urban areas in the country: Taipei, Kao-hsiun and Tʾai-chung.
Taiwan has 3 cities with more than a million people, 10 cities with between 100,000 and 1 million people, and 10 cities with between 10,000 and 100,000 people. The largest city in Taiwan is Taipei, with a population of 7,871,900 people.
