The Palestine region is located in the Middle East and is generally considered to encompass Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. It is a region with a long and tumultuous history, resulting in changing boundaries and contentious definitions of borders. Recognized as the birthplace of Judaism and Christianity, the region is home to many locations and landmarks significant to these, and other, faiths. Today the region includes the states of Israel and Palestine, although the areas occupied by these states (and even the existence of the states themselves) continues to be politically contentious.
The State of Palestine is a sovereign state recognised by more than 130 UN member states and has a total population of more than 4.5 million. The state consists of sixteen administrative divisions, of which the Hebron district is the largest with a population of 706,508 residents. The Gaza division (with Gaza City as its district capital) is the second-largest with a population of 625,824. The state considers East Jerusalem to be its capital, although the city of Ramallah functions as its administrative center. Ramallah has a population of around 60,000 residents, and is regarded as the most liberal area in the state, as well as its economic and cultural center.
