North Korea Cities by Population 2024

North Korea is one of the most populous countries in the world, with an estimated 2016 population that exceeds 24 million people. While it is one of the most populous countries, it is not quite as populated as South Korea, which also happens to be smaller in size. However, North Korea has seen its cities develop over the years and natural growth and migration have contributed to the population surges seen throughout the country's history. The most populous city in this country is Pyongyang, which has a population of over 3 million people. This is the only city in North Korea that has surpassed a population of 1,000,000. North Korea has 12 smaller cities that still contribute significantly to the overall population. Each of these 12 cities fall under the 1,000,000 milestone but each have more than 100,000 inhabitants. There are 58 other major cities that have even smaller but still respectable populations of over 10,000 people. Of course, there are even smaller cities and towns located throughout North Korea, all of which are split among nine provinces.

The vast majority of people that live in North Korea live in urbanized cities. Less than 20% of inhabitants live in rural areas, according to data from 2015. As cities continue to expand and develop and more natives and immigrants head into the larger cities for the opportunities that are provided there, it will be interesting to see how these numbers change among the total population, as well as the populations of these major cities.
