The southernmost of the Scandinavian countries, Denmark is made up of the Jutland peninsula surrounded by an archipelago of almost 450 islands. The capital city of Copenhagen lies on the coastal islands of Amager and Zealand, and is connected to Malmo in southern Sweden by the Oresund Bridge. The city has a population of 775,033, while the surrounding urban area has around 1.3 million residents. Copenhagen is a very popular tourist destination with many landmarks, including the Tivoli Gardens, several palaces, many museums and, most famously of all, the Little Mermaid statue.
Denmark's second-largest city is Aarhus, located on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula. The Aarhus urban area has a population of 273,077, but Aarhus is also the main city in the East Jutland metropolitan area, which has over 1.3 million residents. A center of trade and industry, Aarhus is the cultural and economic core of the Jutland region, and is also home to Scandinavia's largest university. In the southern part of the country is the city of Odense, the third-largest in the country with a population of 178,210. The city is known for being the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, writer of the Little Mermaid fairy story on which Copenhagen's statue is based.
Denmark has 1 cities with more than a million people, 3 cities with between 100,000 and 1 million people, and 71 cities with between 10,000 and 100,000 people. The largest city in Denmark is Copenhagen, with a population of 1,153,615 people.
