Cambodia's capital and largest city is Phnom Penh, which is situated at the junction of the Mekong and Tonlé Sap rivers. Phnom Penh functions as the economic, cultural and political center of Cambodia, and this is reflected in its large population of over 1.5 million residents. Phnom Penh was known as the 'Pearl of Asia' for its beautiful architecture, and it still retains some of the colonial buildings built by the French, including the city's central market, Phsar Thom Thmei, an impressive art deco-style landmark that remains open today.
Phnom Penh shares a border with Cambodia's second-largest city of Krong Ta Khmau, and around sixty percent of Krong Ta Khmau's population of 205,764 travel to Phnom Penh for work. Krong Ta Khmau is also the capital of Kandal Province in central Cambodia. The north western city of Battambang is Cambodia's third-largest city, with 196,709 residents. Battambang is the capital of Battambang Province and is located on the Sangkae River, which runs through the province. Battambang Province is also home to the Laang Spean cave, which contains many historical artifacts.
