The former Soviet country of Armenia, located in South Caucasus region, still retains much of its Soviet-era architecture, particularly in its capital city of Yerevan. The largest city in the country, Yerevan is home to a population of around one million and serves as the administrative, cultural, and economic center of Armenia. Of the key landmarks in Yerevan, the Erebuni Fortress is considered to be the birthplace of the city, while the Katoghike Tsiranavor church is the oldest surviving church in Yerevan. Saint Gregory Cathedral is also located in the city and is the largest Armenian cathedral in the world.
Armenia is divided into ten provinces, which are further divided into communities. After Yerevan, Armavir is the most populous province with 265,770 residents, closely followed by Ararat (named after the biblical Mount Ararat) with a population of 260,367. The provinces of Gegharkunik, Kotayk, Lori and Shirak all have around 250,000 residents. The smallest province in Armenia is Vayots Dzor, located in the south east of the country, with approximately 50,000 residents. Although Vayots Dzor is the least populous of Armenia's provinces, it is nevertheless a popular tourist destination with many ancient landmarks.
