The Western Hemisphere of Earth is a geographical term for the western half of Earth. The Western Hemisphere is typically defined as the area of Earth, including both land and water, which lies west of the prime meridian (0° longitude) up to the 180th meridian. The Western Hemisphere contains all of North America and South America and their islands and surrounding waters, as well as parts of Africa, Europe, Antarctica, and a part of Russia. The Western Hemisphere has less land than the Eastern Hemisphere, containing about 29% of the Earth’s total land.
North America is located in the Western Hemisphere and entirely in the North Hemisphere. North America is comprised of 23 different countries with a total land area of about 9.54 million square miles and a total population of over 580 million people. The 23 North American countries in the Western Hemisphere are: Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, GRenada, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States. North America also has several islands and territories that are not independent states.
South America is located in the Western Hemisphere and almost entirely in the Southern Hemisphere with a small portion in the Northern Hemisphere. South America covers about 6.888 million square miles and has a population of over 422.5 million people. There are 12 countries in South America. The 12 South American countries in the Western Hemisphere are: Argnetina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Urugya, and Venezuela. Of these countries, Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, some of Colombia, and a part of Ecuador are located in the Northern Hemisphere. In addition to these 12 countries, there are also two non-sovereign territories: the Falkland Islands and French Guinea.
Several African countries are located entirely in the Western Hemisphere, including some that are mostly and partially in the Western Hemisphere. Those countries that are entirely in the Western Hemisphere are: Azores, Cape Verse, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Madeira, Mauritania, Morocco, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Western Sahara. Countries that are mostly or partially located in the Western Hemisphere are Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Algeria, and Togo.
Several European countries are located either entirely or partially in the Western Hemisphere. Those countries that are located entirely in the Western Hemisphere are Iceland, Ireland, North Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Those countries that are mostly or partially located in the Western Hemisphere are Spain, England, and France.
