  • Countries whose socialism is written into their constitution are considered socialist countries. It is possible for a country to have a have a non-socialist government but a socialist ruling party. These countries are generally not considered to be socialist countries.
  • It is also theoretically possible for a country to have a socialist constitution/government but a non-socialist ruling party, but no examples of this condition currently exist.
  • Communism is one of multiple variations of socialism. Therefore, communist countries are inherently socialist, but not all socialist countries are considered communist.
  • Former socialist countries that have since dissolved or merged into other countries include the USSR, East Germany, North Vietnam, Tuva, South Yemen, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia.
  • Although Russia is historically considered communist by many in the Western Hemisphere, the country has actually been a federal republic since 1993—albeit one that has become an authoritarian state ruled by a dictator.
