The only thing predictable about the March is just how unpredictable the weather can be. There is a saying that if March comes in like a lion, it goes out like a lamb, and if it comes in like a lamb, it goes out like a lion. When winter meets the beginning of spring, the weather can be windy, rainy, and sometimes downright miserable.
Nevertheless, there are some great places that you could visit if you want to take a vacation in March. At the top of the list is Ireland, for the simple reason that the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are unlike anything that you will experience anywhere else in the world. However, there is so much more to the country than its patron saint. Historical ruins from Celtic times and archeological sites that tell of Viking conquest are just a few of the jewels that you will find in Ireland.
If you are interested in mountain climbing, the areas around the Himalayan Mountains are entering their dry season at the beginning of March. As such, March may be an excellent time to take in the beauty of the Himalayas and possibly even attempt your own ascent up Mount Everest. India is also drier and not oppressively hot in March, so if you want to catch a view of the Himalayas while taking in India’s rich culture, March may be the best time.
The countries in the Arab Gulf – such as Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates – can be oppressively hot during the summer. However, March is the perfect time to visit these desert countries. The weather is sunny but not hot, and there will likely not be any rainfall. More than just vast deserts, these countries also have beaches with blue water and white sand. Egypt, on the other side of the Middle East, is also a good option to visit during March, especially if you want to stay in a resort on the Red Sea after visiting the pyramids and other archeological sites.
The Caribbean islands are warm but not overly hot in March, making this time of year the perfect opportunity to experience their strong cultures and natural beauty. Spain has magnificent beaches and a culture steeped in history and nightlife, and its temperatures are close to ideal during March. More intrepid travelers might even want to cross from Spain into Morocco and see the bazaars and mosques that line its streets.
